Battling tiny nightmares: A fight against deadly fleas in Kenya

Would you believe that something as tiny as an insect bite can cost the life of someone you love?

“Last month we lost one person and even [in] the previous months, we have been losing people who have lost a lot of blood,” these were the words of Pius, a concerned Kenyan who spends some of his free time helping neighbors in need.

See Nightfam, jigger fleas have plagued villages for decades. These tiny parasites inflict daily terror, and the residents struggle to protect themselves from relentless attacks. If they are unlucky, their skin can go from normal to severely infected, causing immense pain and suffering. Sadly, even death.

Driven by compassion, Pius does his best to fight against this problem, despite his own limited resources. Until he finally sought assistance through Project Nightfall Philanthropy’s Weekly 1000.

“If jiggers can be removed or gotten rid of, the [villagers] can be better people, they can even be useful people in the country,” Pius added.

We have partnered with Pius and delivered medicines to his community!

“Today, we [received visitors] from Project Nightfall Philanthropy who had helped us to treat jiggers in the area,” a village nurse shared.

Nightfam, let us continue to fight for a world where even the smallest issues are addressed, ensuring that no one suffers unnecessarily. Thank you for doing your part!

War and hate have destroyed this village in Papua New Guinea, but love is helping them survive

Imagine being woken up from your sleep because of the loud screams of your neighbors…You step out and to your horror, you see some of their homes burning.

What do you do? There’s no time to waste, not even time to think. This nightmare became so real for Micah and his community in Papua New Guinea. Their village was attacked due to political tribal conflicts just a few months ago.

In an instant, 29 people were left homeless, with some even losing their loved ones.

“We got nothing. The only thing we did was we ran for our life…most of my family were killed. My aunties, my brother…I think seven of them were killed in that attack,” shared Micah in the interview.

The villagers found solace in nearby families who welcomed them as refugees. However, life on someone else’s land has been a constant struggle to make ends meet.Micah, a youth leader in his village, found inspiration by following our videos. When he learned about Project Nightfall Philanthropy’s Weekly 1000, he knew he could turn to his Nightfam for help. And he didn’t even ask for much, just a humble request for basic necessities: cooking materials and blankets. They asked for the bare minimum!

Nightfam, we can take immense pride in the strength of our community, rooted in being there for one another in times of need. When Micah and his community were on the verge of losing hope in a world ruined by hate, we stood together, reminding them that love and unity prevail over darkness.

These young orphans in Ghana no longer have to sleep on damp, cold floor
Bright African Childs Ministry

In these pictures, you can see the happiness on these children’s faces as if they just won the lottery! But their celebration holds a deeper meaning once you understand their story. For the very first time, these amazing kids can finally sleep comfortably!

Imagine being a child without parents to tuck you in at night – sleeping on cold, damp floors without a blanket and mattress to keep you warm. That’s the harsh reality for the 30 children at Bright African Child’s Ministry. This is when a long-time supporter of the orphanage thought about nominating them for Project Nightfall Philanthropy’s Weekly 1000. So they can have cozy beds to sleep in!

“These kids in [the] orphanage… It’s not their fault that their country lacks the resources to help them, or that they’re orphans. They didn’t choose this,” shared Gina in her application.

Soon enough, the children got the beds and they were literally jumping for joy!

Nightfam, sometimes, we will underestimate the power of something as simple as a bed because most of us already have it. But to these children, it means so much more. It shows them that they are loved and cared for despite the absence of their own parents.

From now on, when they lay their heads down to rest, they know they can sleep well and dream…dream about a better tomorrow…DREAM about the BRIGTHER FUTURE ahead of them.

We are grateful to you for making this wonderful new reality possible for the children at Bright African Child’s Ministry, Nightfam! Your belief in our mission drives us to do more and reach more communities in need.

Project Nightfall Philanthropy is renovating this damaged school so these students can dream big!

There were a few times you felt a ray of hope because finally, someone would promise to help.

But you kept on waiting and waiting, and the help never really came. That’s exactly what happened to Camara. For years, she studied in a school without a roof. Where rain would be pouring down on her tiny back as she copied notes from her teacher’s board.

“Camara: The school has a lot of problems. There are a lot of damaged places on campus. The toilets are not safe for students and staff. The classrooms are not safe. Even the sitting capacity is not good at all. Because the chairs in the classrooms are not comfortable enough for learning and some roofs have been damaged for years now. And because of that rain beat students during winter. The handpump on campus had been damaged for almost four years now. It is difficult for water to get out of it. Even if water comes out of the pump it contains a bad thing that is not healthy for students, and the gate on campus is not safe at all. Because anyone can enter through the gate without asking for permission. And that is not safe. It is dangerous for students attending the school.”

They kept asking for help. Local politicians, businessmen… But after years, they thought no one will help.

But, Nightfam, Together we will.

Project Nightfall Organization is most concerned about reaching places and people no one else will.

Today Camara has grown up and is an alumnus of that school.

And she has promised herself to do whatever it takes to give the help she never got.

And we have promised to help her. We are fixing the school’s roof, toilets, the gates and even giving them the chance to have safe drinking water at school.

“Camara: Thank you Project Nightfall Organization for fixing our school!”

Thank you for supporting us Nightfam. Thanks to you, people like Camara can have faith that there are good people in this world. And that history doesn’t need to repeat itself.
